Flash Flood At Cator Lane - 15th June 2007

Sudden heavy rain caused the Open Space between Cator Lane and Bramcote Lane to flood again a the Cator Lane end.

This beautiful green corridor will be ruined if the proposed tram extension goes ahead as the tram lines go from one end to the other. NET were not originally aware of this problem when they chose the route. How would the tram cope?

The sewage polluted water floods out of three manhole covers, the first a little way up the Open Space.

The second manhole cover is on Cator Lane itself.

The third manhole cover is outside Greenwood Court.

The water floods off the Open Space and onto Cator Lane.

Traffic can get through initially, but eventually the water gets too deep.

This is a huge problem to the residents who live in the 'dip' as the water reaches somewhere between 1 and 2 feet at its deepest.

The police and the fire brigade are called to shut off the road and help pump the water away.

The last bus through left a bit behind.

This is not the first time (or the last) this flooding has occurred. Unfortunately, its now a regular event. The affected houses have been provided with flood gates. Unfortunately for one house, they are not fully effective this time.

Cator Lane is now a very busy bus route. The buses are simply re-routed to avoid the problem

Further along the proposed tram route there are more signs of flooding. The stream near Sandby Court between Valley Surgery and the new build is also very swollen.

After the rain has stopped and the waters have subsided, it can be seen that the force of the water has lifted on of the manhole covers out of position.

Thanks to George Reynolds for some of the excellent pictures above. He's caught here doing his impression of "Singing in the Rain" or is that "Cursing in the Rain!" It's a disgrace that this problem is allowed to carry on. Why won't Severn Trent and Broxtowe Borough Council get this problem resolved? Could it be that they are waiting for the builders of the proposed tram extension to throw their money at the problem.
